The company is also launching what it calls a new era of gigabit fiber connectivity for Bloomington's Blue Ridge Estates neighborhood today. The move will involve Smithville GigaCity technology and create the city's first “fiberhood.” Smithville's fiber-based GigaCity technology features 1,000 megabits per second up and down in a wireless format. The company is currently building a so-called 'GigaCity' in Jasper and is also expanding its GigaCity service to Danville as well as neighborhoods in Bloomington.
“It's clear that fiber optics is Smithville’s platform of the future,” said Chief Executive Officer Darby McCarty. “This new brand and look will help position the forward-looking nature of Smithville as we continue to expand into new markets and upgrade our services for existing customers.”
An early fiber adopter, Smithville built its first ring at the turn of the century in 2000, and later began a $100 million fiber build in 2009 to residential areas.
The company has more than 140 employees.
