Shepherd Community Center in Indianapolis on Tuesday marked its 40th anniversary with a ceremonial groundbreaking on its planned Community Health & Wholeness Center on the city’s near east side.
The $7.5 million facility, when complete, will provide area residents with physical fitness opportunities, education and other health and wellness resources, the nonprofit said.
The more than 17,000-square-foot center will be attached to Shepherd’s current facility at 4107 East Washington Street. Assistant Executive Director Andrew Green told Inside INdiana Business that the facility will include an indoor playland, full-size basketball court and bleachers, a stage area, classroom meeting space and locker rooms.
Construction on the facility is scheduled to formally begin in April 2026 and take about 12 months to complete.
Shepherd said the facility is being made possible by donors and key partners, including the CareSource Foundation.
“Health goes beyond doctor visits – it’s about access to care, stability and opportunity,” Dr. Cameual Wright, president of CareSource Indiana, said in a news release. “That’s why we’re proud to support Shepherd Community Center. The new Health & Wholeness Center will help families overcome barriers and build a strong foundation for lasting well-being.
Shepherd Community Center was established in 1985 with the goal of breaking the cycle of poverty on the near east side of Indianapolis. The organization provides a range of services such as education, job training, child care, housing, food and health care.
