He announced his resignation from the Indiana GOP in December and officially stepped down in late January. Cardwell was succeeded by Kyle Hupfer, who previously served as the party’s fifth congressional district chairman. In 2012 then Governor-elect Mike Pence appointed Cardwell to serve as executive director of the Office of Faith-based and Community Initiatives, and in September 2013 Pence tapped Cardwell to serve in a Cabinet-level position as senior advisor and special assistant to the Governor. For the past 17 years Cardwell has also regularly volunteered his time, talent, and treasure by serving the people of El Salvador and organizing multiple efforts to provide goods and services in that region. He has also served on the Indianapolis City-County Council and was nominated by then-Governor Pence and later confirmed to be chairman of the Indiana Republican Party. He has received numerous distinguished awards including the Sagamore of The Wabash, Kentucky Colonel, Honorary Colonel of Alabama, Builder of the Year, Honorary Consulate to the Republic of El Salvador, and the Spirit of Independents’ Award.
