The Senate Rules and Legislative Procedure Committee has passed a proposed constitutional amendment that would further define marriage. The measure now moves to the full Indiana Senate, where language involving domestic partner benefits and civil unions could be restored. Proponents in the Senate are pushing for the language to be restored, saying it would make the amendment more defensible in court. Opponents say a Constitutional amendment would make it harder for businesses and universities to attract and retain top talent.

If the proposal passes with its current language, the approval process would start over. If the original language is restored by the Senate and passed by the Indiana House, the issue would go before Indiana voters in November.
