Rose-Hulman lands gifts to support Speed Hall renovation

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is preparing to embark on a $10 million renovation of a 62-year-old first-year residence hall on the Terre Haute campus.
The institute said the work on Speed Hall, set to begin later this year, is being funded by two anonymous gifts.
The gifts were provided to Rose-Hulman by an alumnus and a local community leader, though the names of the donors—as well as the amount of each gift—were not disclosed.
“These gifts will enhance the residential experience for our students, addressing both our growing enrollment and the evolving needs of campus life,” Rose-Hulman President Robert Coons said in a news release. “Investments like these ensure that our living and learning environments continue to support student success for generations to come.”
Speed Hall has been housing first-year students since 1963, and the renovation project will bring central air conditioning, upgraded plumbing and electrical systems, expanded common areas, and improved accessibility to the building, the institute said.
The project is slated for completion ahead of the 2026-27 academic year.
Meanwhile, Rose-Hulman said a new, $31.5 million, four-story residence hall is expected to open this fall. The building, for which ground was broken in September 2023, will house 160 first-year students.
