The transformation of a nearly 120-year-old former paving business into a senior housing community is complete. Rock City Lofts in downtown Wabash, a project supported by the city’s 2014 Stellar Communities designation, includes 41 apartments for residents 55 and older.

The building is the former home of Bridges Paving Co. and continues to house The Rock City Café, which opened more than 100 years ago. Throughout the years, it was also home to businesses including a restaurant, pool hall, appliance store, office supply store and even an A&P grocery store. Indiana Landmarks says, in addition to Stellar Communities, funding for the project included sources such as Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority and façade grants through Wabash Marketplace.
