Richmond, Ind. — Representatives from the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) and Richmond Power and Light (RP&L), along with Richmond city officials, cut the ribbon on a new electric generating facility in the community on Friday. The IMPA Richmond Solar Park is a one megawatt solar facility capable of producing enough electricity to power approximately 200 homes.
“Richmond welcomed the opportunity to not only expand our relationship with IMPA through this effort, but to also bring a viable source of renewable energy into our community,” commented Mayor Sally Hutton. “We are honored to be one of the first three communities to participate in IMPA’s growing solar program, and look forward to many years of this facility providing us with a renewable source of energy.”
“IMPA has long been a proponent of a diverse power supply,” commented Raj Rao, President and CEO of IMPA. “The solar parks we have constructed here in Richmond, as well as in Rensselaer and Frankton, are the foundation of IMPA’s expanding solar generation plan. We appreciate the confidence placed in us by our member communities to diversify our portfolio through the addition of these solar parks, and look forward to working with additional member communities as we expand solar parks to other municipalities throughout the state.”
The IMPA Richmond Solar Park sits on approximately eight acres of land on the grounds of RP&L, and contains approximately 4,000 solar panels to generate one megawatt of electricity. The solar park utilizes a horizontal tracking system for the panels that enables them to move, tracking the sun throughout the day. Construction on the park began earlier this year and was completed in August. IMPA utilized several local and regional contractors to complete the project, including civil work by B and B Construction of Richmond.
The Indiana Municipal Power Agency is the not-for-profit wholesale power provider to 59 cities and towns across Indiana and one Ohio community who own and operate the municipal electric distribution systems in their communities.
