Revamp on The Horizon For Delphi High Bridge

The Monon High Bridge in Delphi, which was included on the organization’s 10 Most Endangered list last year, is more than 125 years-old and was vacated by CSX Corp. (Nasdaq: CSX) 30 years ago. Indiana Landmarks is expecting to secure title of the span and nearly half-a-mile of connected property over the next two months from the rail company. The repair work is expected to cost $121,000.
Landmarks President Marsh Davis says the statewide nonprofit has been working for years to acquire the historic structure. He says local partners reached out last year about Landmarks acquiring the bridge from CSX "because no local entity could afford the liability, given the deteriorated condition of the pier. Our board weighed the risk and the importance of the High Bridge and voted to save the bridge. We expect to have the title by the end of June, when we’ll move quickly to rebuild the pier and address the cause of the deterioration."
Indiana Landmarks says it will transfer ownership of the bridge to Deer Creek Township once repairs are complete. The township will handle the ensuing renovations using Indiana Department of Natural Resources grant money. It also plans to sign a lease with local nonprofit Heartland Heritage Inc. to handle future trail maintenance.

The bridge was recently in the national spotlight as the location where two local girls were last seen before being murdered. The killer has not yet been captured.
