The Elkhart Truth says nearly all of Middlebury-based EverGreen Recreational Vehicles LLC’s 400 workers were told last week to not come to work this week.
The publication says company officials have not commented, but employees and local leaders have called it a done deal. Rumors of a closure have been swirling since early last week.
The news comes on the heels of contrasting announcements involving the industry in the region. Two weeks ago, President Barack Obama visited Elkhart to tout the comeback of the city, which had the nation’s lowest unemployment rate when he took office. A few days later, longtime Elkhart-based employer, CTS Corp. (NYSE: CTS) announced plans to phase out production at its Elkhart plant by the middle of 2018. The company’s Elkhart history dates back over a century, and the move is expected to affect 230 employees by the end of 2018.
In 2014, EverGreen completed the acquisition of Skyilne Corp.’s RV unit, which was located in Bristol at the time. Earlier this year, EverGreen detailed plans to fold the Skyline operations into its Middlebury headquarters and expand its footprint.
