A locomotive manufacturer that announced plans in 2010 to bring 650 jobs to Muncie may be close to those figures. A Progress Rail Services Corp. official tells The Star-Press the facility currently employs approximately 500. The publication says the Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) subsidiary's work force was reported to have reached 600 or more last year. It was working on contracts which included a rushed order to complete passenger locomotives by the start of this year.

Manufacturing has taken a large hit in the Delaware County city before and after Progress Rail announced the location in 2010. Among them, BorgWarner Automotive, which closed in 2009.
