Purdue Unveils Anniversary Ice Cream
Purdue University Dining & Catering has unveiled a new ice cream flavor in honor of the university’s sesquicentennial celebration. Boiler Tracks, created in part by food science students, features vanilla ice cream with a mix of chocolate pieces, toffee and caramel.
The ice cream was developed through a partnership between Dining & Catering and students in a capstone class in the Department of Food Science. Seven teams of students developed ice cream products from developing a sensory profile, creating a recipe, preparing samples, product testing, packaging and branding.
Boiler Tracks will be served in residential dining courts on the West Lafayette Campus, as well as Harrison Grill and will be available for purchase at Pappy’s Sweet Shop in the Purdue Memorial Union. It will also be sold at select retail locations.
"We came to students with this challenge to create a flavor for us to serve in the dining courts and at Pappy’s for Purdue’s 150th anniversary," said Greg Minner, director of Dining & Catering. "The students who created this flavor rose to the challenge magnificently. We’re proud to be able to serve an ice cream that is a true Purdue production to the Boilermaker community."
The ice cream is being produced by Round Barn Creamery in Kewanna, which is owned by Purdue alumni Craig and Christy Coon.
