A record 48.3 percent of residents from the 2015-2016 school year registered to return to on-campus housing. This is the highest number of returners the University has seen since 1999. New students who contracted for housing have also hit a record number.
The University Residences will open a wait list for first year students and an additional wait list for transfer students to accommodate late applicants. Purdue will assign 300-400 students to temporary and auxiliary spaces, similar to the past fall. The Union Club Hotel at the Purdue Memorial Union will be one of the very short term options for temporary housing. Other areas will be used for intermediate-length stays such as guest apartments, residence hall lounges and study rooms. These spaces will be utilized for several weeks while on-campus apartments will serve as auxiliary space for the full semester. The University will provide assistance with moving, transition coordination and residential life programming and staff to students placed in temporary and auxiliary housing.
“Students in temporary housing last fall reported an overall positive experience, many even requesting to remain in their temporary housing all year. These positive experiences and the high return rate tell us University Residences is an outstanding living option for all students,” said Barb Frazee, executive director of University Residences. “Students take advantage of the academic integration opportunities and the convenience of living on a residential campus.”
Purdue Dining & Catering also has plans in place to accommodate the record number of on-campus students. The dining courts will extend hours with three locations serving continuously from breakfast to dinner. Students will have more options to use meal plans outside of the dining courts and a new takeout option at Hillenbrand Dining Court has been added along with three new retail operations in the new Honors College and Residences.
