The competition features designs for a passenger capsule that could travel at nearly the speed of sound in a vacuum tube.
The Purdue Hyperloop Team, consisting of 18 members, joins over 1,000 students from 120 universities in the competition, which is being held at Texas A&M University January 29 and 30. Ten teams, five selected by judges and five selected by SpaceX, will get to test their designs at the SpaceX Hyperloop test track in California later this year.
Purdue’s Team Captain Paul Witsberger says the design project is a "very multi-disciplinary problem." Students from the university’s schools of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, along with the departments of Computer Science and Physics and Astronomy provided input for the project.
Five additional teams that receive corporate sponsorship will also get to test their designs. The Purdue team was selected for this weekend’s competition after submitting a preliminary design last year.
