Purdue ranked among top global universities for utility patents

A new ranking released by the National Academy of Inventors shows Purdue University remains in the top 10 in the world for U.S. utility patents. The university is ranked No. 7 with 213 patents from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office in 2024.
Purdue’s ranking falls one spot from No. 6 on the 2023 list, but the university’s number of patents is up from 198 that same year.
“Purdue again demonstrates excellence at scale with a top four ranking among American universities that received U.S. patents in 2024. We pride ourselves on translating fundamental research breakthrough into societal impact,” Purdue President Mung Chiang said in a news release. “The Purdue Innovates program has intensified the support for Boilermaker inventors and entrepreneurs since it was launched.”
Indiana University is also ranked on the 2024 list at No. 93 with 40 patens issued, down 20 spots from the previous year.
The top five universities on the list are King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia, The Regents of the University of California, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University in China, and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia.
