The funding will be used to develop and implement strategies to deal with adult obesity in Jackson and Lawrence Counties.
Tim Gavin, head of the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Purdue, is partnering with Purdue Extension on the project. The Discovery Learning Research Center will also be involved by evaluating the success of the project’s interventional strategies.
"Obesity is a serious public health concern, and fixing the problem begins with understanding and supporting each individual community’s needs," said Gavin. "Each Purdue Extension office is a trusted community resource, and that gives us a foundation to build on as we work together to create long-term solutions for this public health problem."
The grant will run through October 2018.
