‘Project Indiana’ Earns International Award

NRECA Interim CEO Jeffrey Connor presents IEC CEO Tom VanParis with the International Award

An philanthropic project created by Indiana Electric Cooperatives has earned the International Award from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. "Project Indiana," which began in 2012, has resulted in four remote villages in Guatemala receiving electricity.

The goal of the project is not just to provide electricity to the villages, but to enhance the communities. The NRECA’s International Award recognizes "exceptional dedication to the development of international communities through electrification."

"With Project Indiana, the hearts of Hoosiers extend beyond our borders and into countries that have never had the opportunities we have," said Tom VanParis, CEO of Indiana Electric Cooperatives. "It’s rare when you get to be part of a project that sets progress in motion. The world is a better place when we help those places of the ‘have-nots’ to become the ‘haves.’"

IEC says the project will continue every other year to with teams returning to Guatemala to extend electricity.
