Project to Accommodate Fort Wayne Airport Growth

The Fort Wayne International Airport has announced a $3.3 million project that will lay the groundwork for possible terminal and parking expansion in the future. Construction is expected to begin within the next couple of months and will involve reconfiguring the terminal entrance road, creating new entryways into parking areas and demolishing an existing hangar. Plans also include a new monument sign and cell phone lot. In an interview with our partners at WPTA21, Airport Authority Executive Director Scott Hinderman says the changes would impact yet-to-be-determined growth that could be on tap "in the 2020s."

Details of those plans, officials say, are too far off to fully lay out now. Hinderman told WPTA the newly-detailed project is the initial phase of "something larger" that could ultimately involve improvements like more gates, an enlarged U.S. Transportation Security Administration area, relocating the food and beverage space or shifting the airport’s existing museum elsewhere within the terminal.

In a statement, Hinderman said "today we are handling our passengers well, but, we needed to make sure we are in position to handle additional travel moving forward as well. As Fort Wayne is on ‘The Road to One Million’ in population, we need to make sure we are in a place to accommodate that growth."

Construction on the initial phase is expected to take most of this year.
