Two initiatives being used by school districts in multiple Indiana communities aim to boost student performance and graduation by involving parents and community leaders. Stand For Children Indiana's Stand UP program is designed to engage parents at under-performing IPS elementary schools and will graduate its first class this weekend. In Wayne, Lake, and Clark counties, Communities in Schools uses site coordinators to help connect students with resources ranging from supplies to mentor services. On a recent edition of Inside INdiana Business Television, CIS Director Vivian Ashmawi and former Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Sue Ellen Reed said the program is already showing positive results.

Indianapolis, Ind. — Indiana Congressman Andr? Carson (D-7th) is scheduled to attend the inaugural Stand University for Parents (Stand UP) graduation in Indianapolis this Saturday. Carson will give the keynote address.

Forty-five IPS parents will become the first Stand UP graduates in Indiana after taking an eight-week course that teaches parents how they can support their child's academic success and build meaningful partnerships with their child's school leaders.

Stand UP is a research-based, family engagement course for parents of elementary school children that is provided by Stand for Children Indiana. Stand UP is focused on actionable steps parents can take immediately to get involved in their children's academics and to ensure their child is on track for college. Topics include: parental role-definition, parent-school relationships, understanding and acting on student data and grades, and specific strategies to help students learn at home.

Stand UP was implemented in partnership with IPS. Parent graduates hail from IPS Schools 93, 99 and 44. Schools 93 and 44 have both been listed as “priority schools” by IPS leaders due to chronic low performance – each having received an “F” rating by the State Department of Education.
