A new, privately owned racetrack could soon be coming to southern Allen County. Our partners at WPTA-TV report the Summit City Motorsports Club is proposing to build the track on nearly 380 acres near Fort Wayne International Airport.
Summit City Motorsports Club is owned by local entrepreneurs Bill Bean, Tom Kelley and Chuck Surack. The club said the track, if approved and built, would primarily be used by club members.
Surack told The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne that the project could cost $40 million to $60 million. While designs haven’t been finalized, he estimated the track would be 3-4.5 miles in length.
The club has filed a special use application with the Allen County Board of Zoning Appeals to use the land near Branstrator and Hamilton roads for the track.
“Until we meet with the parties that reside in the vicinity of the proposed project, we have no additional comment other than what is contained in the application,” Mark Bains, an attorney representing the club, said in a written statement to WPTA. “We would ask for everyone to keep an open mind and not jump to conclusions. All of the people involved in the project are committed to a first-class addition to our community that will enhance our efforts to making Northeast Indiana a premier location in which to Live, Work, and Play.”
The club will host a community meeting for residents to discuss the proposed project on March 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the basement of Saint Aloysius Catholic School in Yoder.
