Indiana Poet Laureate Curtis Crisler and award-winning novelist Larry Sweazy will headline Huntington University’s sixth-annual StoryCon on Saturday.
The one-day event provides an opportunity for high school and university students to develop their craft in writing and learn from acclaimed authors, the university said in a news release.
Crisler will host a workshop on “finding your voice through the epistolary poem,” the news release said. An English professor at Purdue University Fort Wayne, he was named the Indiana poet laureate in January 2024 by the Indiana Arts Commission. He has written several poetry books, and among his awards are a RHINO Founder’s award and Eric Hoffer awards as well as nominations for the Eliot Rosewater award and a Jessie Redmon Fauset Book Award.
Sweazy is an author of 19 novels who has been awarded eight national writing awards, including two Western Writers of America Spur Awards and two Will Rogers Medallion Awards. He has served on the faculty and board of directors for the Midwest Writers Workshop and the faculty for the Indiana Writers Center. He lives in Noblesville.
StoryCon will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Huntington University. Students can register for the free event at huntington.edu/ForesterCamp/StoryCon. Questions can be directed to Todd Martin at tmartin@huntington.edu.
Indiana Humanities helps sponsor the event, which is hosted by the university’s English Department.
A 2024 Huntington University graduate said her experience at StoryCon proved inspiring.
“StoryCon reminded me that no matter your qualification or age, your story deserves to be heard,” Annie Seboe said in the news release. “I found a new sense of confidence in myself and my writing, and taking constructive criticism from others was now easier, as I saw it as an opportunity to grow.”
