The former president of Indianapolis-based information technology company Apparatus is launching a new venture. Aman Brar, who also previously served as vice president of business development for now-defunct ChaCha in Carmel, is unveiling what he says is the first text-based interviewing platform: Canvas. He says it brings the job search process to a more "preferred mode of communication" than traditional methods. Brar will be featured this weekend on Inside INdiana Business Television.

He says "demographic trends are kind of speaking for themselves" and showing an increasing shift toward text massaging in the personal and business worlds. "It’s the way people keep in touch with their friends, family coworkers," Brar told Inside INdiana Business. "Given you could find your next spouse via a chat platform, we think that getting to know talent and really screening at the top of the funnel and asking the screening type of questions in an asynchronous way drives efficiency for the enterprise, but also meets talent where they are today."

Canvas works like this: A candidate receives a text message from a potential employer that begins the discussion. All of the software involved in the conversation is "on the enterprise side of the equation," so job seekers do not have to download anything. Clients of all sizes recruiting employees of all professions have already been using the platform since March and Brar says he’s been "super-pleased" with the response. He says recruiters have even said candidates have told them they want to work at their company because they conducted the process using the text messaging-based approach. Brar says users like the familiarity of texting over talking on the phone, "which tends to be a stranger activity everyday."
