The Plainfield Town Council has approved a contract to begin construction on a new government center. The town says it worked with Indianapolis-based RATIO Architects for more than a year on the initial design for the facility.

The phased project is scheduled to kick off this month and construction is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2022. The center will be built west of the current municipal building.

“This is an exciting second phase of our Conceptual Downtown Redevelopment Plan,” said Town Council President Robin Brandgard. “We addressed the parking concerns with the construction of the Plainfield parking structure. Now, we’re focusing on long-term planning and the addition of entertainment to our downtown district.”

The town says the center is designed to be connected to a Performing & Fine Arts Center, which could be built where the current Municipal Building sits. The Town Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hendricks County Arts Groups to establish a partnership for the development of the center.

“We found it important to take a step back and conduct a new market study before approving the entire project at this time,” said Brandgard. “We are mindful that the global pandemic may have an effect on the arts, and we are looking to get a better understanding of that impact before approving the 600-seat Performing & Fine Arts Center.”
