If approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration, residents, businesses and certain nonprofits in the county and surrounding counties in Indiana and Michigan could benefit.
The loan request covers damage from severe storms that began on August 15 and not Wednesday’s storms in central Indiana. Pence’s office says in addition to St. Joseph County, contiguous counties including LaPorte, Starke, Marshall and Elkhart, in addition to Berrien and Cass counties in Michigan, would qualify for the loans.
"Recent storms have battered the state, most severely in South Bend and St. Joseph County," said Pence. "At my direction, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security is coordinating with local responders and leaders to assist. Damage assessments have been ongoing, and qualifying damage has pointed efforts toward a request for low-interest disaster loans."
The governor’s office says assessments are still being conducted following this week’s storms, which caused severe damage in Howard, Carroll and Montgomery counties, and it will take additional time until the full extent of the damage is recorded.
