If approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration, the loans would also be available to six contiguous counties.
Residents, businesses and certain nonprofits in Howard, Cass, Carroll, Clinton, Tipton, Grant and Miami counties would be eligible to apply for the loans. Severe storms on August 24 caused heavy damage throughout the area, including several tornado touchdowns.
"August has been a difficult month for Indiana regarding severe weather," said Pence. "The storms that began August 24 hit many counties, and while they were more violent and caused more widespread devastation than earlier flooding, tornadoes tend to be insured, which means certain federal programs will not apply. With that taken into account, the State of Indiana is applying for low-interest disaster loans."
Last week, the SBA made disaster loans available in five northern Indiana counties to help with recovery from severe storms in mid-August.
