Another Indiana health system has unveiled a major investment. Parkview Health in Fort Wayne has announced plans for an $80 million cancer facility. The system says increased demand is leading to the need for the Parkview Cancer Institute, which is expected to be complete in late 2017. Groundbreaking for the 125,000 square-foot institute is expected in the fourth quarter of this year.

Parkview says it has seen “significant growth” in the number of patients needing cancer treatment. In addition, the system says the region's growing and aging population is leading to increased patient volume.

Officials say the Parkview Cancer Institute will be patient-centered and physician-led. The center will feature natural lighting, private space for families and respite rooms. The system says it is working with leading cancer facilities throughout the United States to gather data on what the Parkview Cancer Institute should include.

The facility will be built on the southeastern portion of the existing campus, which Parkview says will allow for convenient access and enhanced patient flow.

In November, Parkview broke ground on a $20 million facility in Warsaw. Officials expect Parkview Warsaw to be complete late this year and create more than 100 jobs.

About a month earlier, the system announced plans to invest $55 million into its Randallia campus in Fort Wayne, saying the project will result in nearly 150 new jobs, upgraded facilities and expanded services. Chief Operating Officer Ben Miles says specifics for the effort include new surgery suites and structural improvements to the more than 60-year-old building.
