Park Project to Bring New Life to Downtown Greenwood

The revitalization of downtown Greenwood is about to take its next step. During his State of the City address Thursday, Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers unveiled his plan to redevelop Old City Park, located in the heart of the city’s downtown, which he says will bring more walkability, connectivity, green space and community gathering places to the area. 

Plans for the revitalization effort include transforming Machledt Drive, which currently runs through Old City Park, into a promenade designed for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as an extension of the Pleasant Creek Trail, which will provide a path into Craig Park and the Greenwood Amphitheater. 

Myers tells Inside INdiana Business the project, along with previously-completed efforts such as the downtown facade project, works toward the city’s goal to bring more residents and especially businesses into the city.

"Businesses look at amenities. They look at your downtown. They look at the viability of the community when they’re looking to land their business," said Myers. "We want to put Greenwood at the top of the chart where they can see that we are a city on the move, we’re a city of pride and progress and we are progressing rapidly and doing a great job in adding new amenities all the time."

The Old City Park plans also include adding a tree-lined road that connects Surina Way to Market Plaza in downtown Greenwood, as well as the replacement of a century-old sewer. The mayor says that will set the stage for the redevelopment of the soon-to-be vacant 19-acre Greenwood Middle School property recently purchased by the city.

"It’s not often a property of this size, in the heart of a downtown, becomes available for development," said Myers. "The potential for these 19 acres is off the charts, and as I’ve said before, we plan to tap into every last bit."
