Our partners at The Herald Bulletin report the Madison County commissioners have tabled a request to remove the mall from an upcoming certificate sale.
Speaking before the commissioners Tuesday, an attorney for the Cook family said the owners are exploring options to either repurpose the mall or sell it. Jonathan Cook said the family is looking at other proposals for the building.
Cook said the mall property is over-assessed and a report of $611,000 in delinquent property taxes is not accurate, according to the publication. Commissioner John Richwine said if the mall is removed from the certificate sale, which is scheduled for April 9, it could return to the list in 2019 with $1 million in taxes owed.
Cook said if the family could not reach a deal to sell the mall or repurpose it within a year, it would not come back to request another removal from the tax sale. The commissioners could vote to remove the building from the sale list at its next meeting April 3.
