The Omni Severin Hotel in downtown Indianapolis has notified the state it will extend furloughs for 69 employees as the hospitality industry struggles to recover from the pandemic.

The hotel initiated the temporary furloughs starting in mid-March. At the time, the company anticipated the move would be short-term.

“Regrettably, it now appears that the length and severity of the direct effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on our business operations are greater than previously were foreseeable,” said the company in its WARN notice.  “As a result, we have had to reassess our initial understanding of the circumstances facing the hotel.”

The Omni Severin says a number of the furloughs will extend beyond six months. While considered temporary, the hotel says the duration is unknown.
