Saying it wants to modernize the fan experience at signature sporting events, the University of Notre Dame on Friday announced it’s expanding the sale of alcohol at football games to general admission seating.
Men’s and women’s basketball and hockey games will also sell alcohol, the university said.
“Fans will have the opportunity to purchase alcoholic beverages at concession stands inside Notre Dame Stadium, Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center and Compton Family Ice Arena,” Notre Dame said in a news release. “This expansion will provide for a modern fan experience, consistent with other professional and collegiate stadiums and venues throughout the nation. Notre Dame is committed to promoting responsible consumption and ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all attendees.”
Notre Dame has been selling alcohol in premium seating sections for all three sports. It has also sold alcohol in Notre Dame Stadium when the venue has hosted non-university affiliated entertainment like concerts and Premier League soccer exhibitions.
Over the past five years, most major college football stadiums have moved to alcohol sales. The University of Nebraska, which has a stadium slightly larger than Notre Dame’s, estimates it will earn $3-$4 million in revenue when it also starts sales this fall.
The move also comes as the House Settlement is expected to change the face of college sports and allows schools to share almost $21 million with players.
