The University of Notre Dame has appointed Ernest Morrell Coyle Professor in literacy education and inaugural director of the Center for Literacy Education. He previously served as Macy Professor of English Education at Columbia University’s Teachers College and was director of Columbia’s Institute for Urban and Minority Education. Morrell is also the author of several books, including “Critical Media Pedagogy: Teaching for Achievement in City Schools,” which won Choice Magazine’s Outstanding Academic Title Award. He is serving a three-year term on the American Educational Research Association’s Executive Committee. He previously served as president of the National Council of Teachers of English and is a member of the International Literacy Association and the ILA’s Literacy Research Panel. Morrell received his MA and Ph. D in education from the University of California, Berkeley.
