Notre Dame, IU Women Take Titles

Two Division I basketball teams brought national titles back to Indiana this weekend. The University of Notre Dame women’s team capped off a 35-3 season with a buzzer-beating win against Mississippi State University Sunday to capture their second NCAA National Championship. On Saturday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana University took their first-ever Women’s National Invitation Tournament championship with a 65-57 win over Virginia Tech.
Notre Dame stormed back from a 15-point deficit in the third quarter for Head Coach Muffet McGraw’s 800th victory with the Irish and her 888th overall. The school last won the national title in 2001 and is the seventh women’s basketball program to win the championship multiple times.
Indiana University’s victory was in front of a record home crowd for the program: 13,007. The Hoosiers finished the season with a 23-13 record.
