The layout on the Joyce Center includes more than 32,000 trays of plants and a rooftop irrigation system.
The school says the 79,000 square-foot roof on the home of the athletics department and Purcell Pavilion arena is part of an ongoing strategy to cut its carbon footprint in half by 2030. The installation is the fifth living rooftop at Notre Dame, joining greenscapes on top of the Morris Inn, Corbett Family Hall, Duncan Student Center and O’Neill Hall.
"The University is firmly committed to being a good steward of our natural resources," said Executive Vice President John Affleck-Graves in a release. "In addition to saving energy and improving stormwater runoff, this green roof will also contribute to the natural beauty of our campus while replicating the design of our quads."
Green roofs are designed to provide benefits including improving air quality, providing noise insulation and helping regulate indoor temperature. It also shields the roof surface from ultraviolet radiation, extending its life.
The Joyce Center green roof was designed and grown by Michigan-based LiveRoof, and installed by South Bend-based Midland Engineering Co.
