Trail Heads – Southwest Indiana, a nonprofit based out of Boonville, has received approval from the University of Southern Indiana and the USI Foundation to move forward with a project it says would bring 20 miles of trails and more than 22 acres of bike parks. The new trails would be located on the university’s 1,400-acre campus in Evansville.

The nonprofit says it aims to develop quality trails and trail support programs throughout southwest Indiana.

“While this trail system would offer a much-needed hub for local trail users, the scale and variety of features in this project would also help the University of Southern Indiana stand out as one of the premier campuses in the country for bike trails,” said Brad Scales, executive director for Trail Heads. “We hope the local and regional communities will get behind this project and help to make it a reality.”

The nonprofit says it will begin fundraising to raise matching funds towards a $1 million grant through the third round of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Next Level grant program. If full funding is awarded, construction would begin by next fall and take two years to complete.
