Merrillville-based Northern Indiana Public Service Co. is proposing a massive modernization initiative. In filings with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, NIPSCO says it plans to spend more than $1 billion on infrastructure improvements throughout the region. The utility wants to revamp underground lines, conduit, poles and circuits. Construction could get underway next year.

The upgrades are included in a seven-year plan and could lead to future rate adjustments.
