Melissa Coxey, who was named to the position earlier this month, says she has big shoes to fill following the retirement of former executive director Grant Monahan. The nonprofit trade association represents a variety of retailers ranging from large chains to small businesses and Coxey says she wants to help give the latter a greater voice.
In a recent interview on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, Coxey said Monahan did an “amazing” job telling the story of Indiana retail.
“We know that there is more of a story to tell and that’s why I would like to reach out across the state to smaller retailers that traditionally have not had a voice at the Statehouse and get them involved in policy in a way they maybe haven’t in the past,” said Coxey. “There are so many innovators out there, retailers across the state of the Indiana, that can be brought to the table and have a voice with respect to their regulation.”
Coxey says retailers are a very important part of the Indiana economy as the top employers throughout the state. She says her previous work with the council attracted her to the position.
“One of the things I love about working with Indiana retailers is its the perfect intersection between my professional and personal life. I’m a mom and as a mom, I can tell you that Indiana retailers impact our lives in such a profound way.”
Coxey came to the council after serving as legal counsel to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. She also previously worked at Bose McKinney & Evans LLP in Indianapolis and served nearly 10 years as a commissioner and staff attorney at the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission.
Monahan announced his retirement last fall after 40 years at the helm of the Indiana Retail Council. He will remain in an advisory role at the council through the summer.
