New Development Aims to Spur Job Growth

State and local officials will be on hand Friday for the grand opening of a nearly $14 million housing development near the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The Overlook at the Fairgrounds includes 50 one- and two-bedroom apartments as well as amenities designed to connect residents to jobs and education opportunities. 

The 89,000 square-foot development is the result of a public and private investment into the former Homer J. Williamson Candy Factory. It features a rooftop terrace, balconies facing the fairgrounds, a new fourth floor addition and event space.  It also includes an on-site training room and computer lab for residents looking for work or to continue their education. 

The development was led by Indianapolis-based property management company BWI LLC. Funding came from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, the state development fund, state Community Development Block Grants and private lenders.

"Our vision for Overlook at the Fairgrounds was simple, in that we wanted to connect residents to countless amenities that ultimately will benefit their overall well-being," said Gary Hobbs, chief executive officer of BWI. "Working with our partners in the public and private sector, we know that our efforts are resulting in residents using the trail system to bike to school or work, utilizing transit options, and gaining new skills onsite to strengthen their marketability as 21st century workers."

The Overlook at the Fairgrounds is already at full occupancy. Friday’s grand opening celebration will include Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch and Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett.
