An iconic restaurant just south of downtown Indianapolis, known for its corned beef and Reuben sandwiches, may soon be overshadowed by a six-story hotel. But the owners of Shapiro’s Delicatessen don’t mind, because they own the land.

Dora Hospitality Group has announced a new hotel brand, Even Hotels, will be built on Shapiro-owned property across the street from the popular eatery.

Even Hotels is a new product from the IHG hotel chain. Dora Hospitality Group, which will serve as the local manager, says the lodging caters to holistic needs of travelers by offering a full-sized gym, glass-enclosed meeting rooms and other amenities that fit a healthier lifestyle.

According to Dora, the hotel offers upgraded tile bathrooms and extra-large televisions, but it also will have as “unplugged” area with board games with food and drink available.

The developer says Shapiro’s will be working with the hotel staff to create a menu to fit the needs of the hotel customer, including late meals for business travelers.

While the 118-room hotel is being built on land that the Shapiro family has owned for decades, current owner Brian Shapiro will be a limited partner, according to a news release.

Dora Hospitality Group says the land is within an Opportunity Zone which is designed to attract capital investment.

The Even is scheduled to open in the fall of 2020.

National Diabetes Month: The business case for battling diabetes in Indianapolis

Diabetes has exploded in the U.S. and Indiana. Today, there is a greater than one-in-three chance you know someone in Indiana who has been diagnosed with diabetes (Type I, Type II or gestational), is prediabetic or doesn’t know they have diabetes. I know this from experience – my mother was diabetic, and my wife has had Type I diabetes since she was 13 years old....
