Starting March 19, customers within the current "317" area code are encouraged to dial with all 10 digits ahead of the September start of the new "463" area code, when the dialing pattern will be mandatory.
The state is implementing the same "overlay" method for the new area code that launched the "930" area code last year in southern Indiana. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor say projections suggest the supply of "317" numbers will run out by year’s end.
The IURC approved the 317/463 overlay last April. Starting September 17, 10-digit dialing will be required for all calls, and on October 17, "463" numbers will be in play. Current numbers and area codes will not change.
