The U.S. Navy will Saturday commission its newest Virginia-class attack submarine, the USS Indiana. The submarine, which the Navy says is the "most modern and sophisticated attack submarine in the world," is the first to be commissioned with the name "Indiana."

Work on the USS Indiana began in 2015, and the sub was christened in April 2017. The vessel is 337 feet long, 34 feet wide and weighs approximately 7,800 tons submerged. The Navy says it can travel at a speed of more than 25 knots when submerged. 

Saturday’s ceremony to commission the new USS Indiana will feature a keynote address from Congressman Jim Banks (R-03) of Indiana. Governor Eric Holcomb will also speak at the event.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. in Port Canaveral, Florida. 

While the submarine is the first of its kind to have the name "Indiana" attached to it, its the third Navy vessel to bear the name, the first two being heavy battleships. The first USS Indiana served from 1895 to 1903 and the second was commissioned in 1941 and decommissioned in 1947.
