Mounds Mall to Close in April

Mounds Mall in Anderson will close its doors next month. Jonathan Cook, a spokesman for the family that owns the mall, tells our partners at The Herald Bulletin changing economic conditions and the loss of anchor tenant Carson’s led to the decision to close.
The mall will close April 1 after 53 years of operation. In a post on Facebook, officials say the mall has not been profitable for several years.
"This has been an extremely difficult decision and one we have not taken lightly," the post said. "Any decision that directly impacts the lives of our employees and the employees of our tenants are always the toughest to make. With the loss of Carson’s the mall owners simply cannot continue to subsidize the operation of the 300,000 square foot enclosed mall going forward. As many of you know, unfortunately, this is not something that is unique to our mall as retail centers around the country are struggling."
The Mounds Mall 10 Theatre and the Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care office will remain open because they have exterior entrances. However, the restaurant at the mall, Garfield’s, is closing effective immediately.
The mall owners say they will be looking to repurpose the mall in the future.
