Construction on the proposed 125-bed University Park complex is expected to begin in June and take around a year to complete. Though the school has no official student housing, the new, privately-owned development will be located close to campus.
Mayor Greg Goodnight says "this will only enhance the appeal of IU Kokomo as a destination campus. This goes hand in hand with all the improvements and renovations at the school. We are excited that 6G Properties chose Kokomo for this investment."
Enrollment at IUK, which the city says is the fastest-growing campus in the Indiana University system, is currently more than 3,000 students. Peru-based 6G Properties Managing Partner Dave Van Baalen says the development will have a traditional college housing feel. "There is a demand for housing all over Kokomo and especially near the university. Students want to live near the campus and have easy access. It is a great location, close to city bike trails and walking paths," he said.
Another student-centered housing development near the campus called The Annex of Kokomo opened in 2016.
