Our partners at WPTA-TV report while the company behind the e-commerce warehouse effort known as Project Mastodon was not revealed during a Fort Wayne Plan Commission hearing, the project could create about 1,000 jobs.
City documents previously showed the project would be an e-commerce storage and fulfillment center for “a large internet distributor” and the building would be owned and operated by a single tenant.
The three-story building would include a total of nearly 3 million square feet on a 150-acre site along U.S. 30 near the Sweetwater headquarters in Fort Wayne. A representative of the developer said more than half of the property would be built out, according to WPTA.
The new jobs associated with the project would have an average wage of $15 an hour.
The size and scope of the project has led to speculation that Amazon would be the tenant operating the facility, though the specific company has not yet been confirmed. Amazon is currently building a $60 million, 635,000-square-foot warehouse near Fort Wayne International Airport and also opened a 150,000-square-foot delivery station in the Allen County city last year.
The public hearing, WPTA reports, was part of an effort to secure approval for a structure that would exceed current size limits.
