Congressman Todd Rokita (R-4) says he is considering a run for the U.S. Senate. Earlier this week, Dan Coats (R-IN) announced he will not seek re-election in 2016. Since then, former Indiana Republican Party Chairman Eric Holcomb announced he is running for the seat and U.S. representatives Todd Young (R-9) and Susan Brooks (R-5) say they are also mulling runs.

News Release

Fellow Hoosiers,

I had hoped Senator Coats would seek re-election next year and had encouraged him to do so. I genuinely feel that he has been a positive and thoughtful force for conservative principles in the Senate and has unquestionably served as a mentor and leader for the entire Hoosier delegation in Washington, for which he is due more credit than most realize.

I will personally miss working with Senator Coats on issues that impact our state and he undoubtedly leaves big shoes to fill.

Over the last few days I heard from all kinds of friends across the state encouraging me to consider running for the U.S. Senate. Thank you to everyone who has reached out for your kind words and encouragement. I have been listening closely. My foremost priority these last few weeks has been attending to my duties as the Vice Chairman of the House Budget Committee by helping craft and pass (just on Wednesday) a conservative budget that honestly balances and begins paying down our federal debt over a reasonable amount of time.

Kathy and I are actively weighing how our family can best serve Indiana over the next several years. I want to talk with Hoosiers about whether my experience as your Secretary of State and now my leadership in the U.S. House can best be utilized in the U.S. Senate.

I have talked with my friends in our delegation and I understand that several of them are also weighing these same considerations, as they should be. Our party’s decision on who is best prepared to succeed Dan Coats in the Senate is a critical one that should not be taken lightly or made hastily.

As we consider this opportunity to continue our public service, please know that the opinions of those who have for so long supported our efforts are important to us and I want to hear from you.

Thank you for all of your support now, in the past, and in the future. I am looking forward to the work ahead!

Sincerely,

Todd
