The expansion and widening of the Monon Greenway is underway in Carmel. The $30 million project in Midtown and the Arts & Design District will transform the single-lane trail into public areas with green spaces, plazas and more lanes for walkers, bikers and vehicular traffic.

A portion of the greenway, considered to be one of the most congested, will be changed from 12 feet wide, to 140 feet from 1st Street SW to the future 6th Street SW. “This investment in the heart of our Midtown area has already resulted in millions of dollars in private investment from companies wanting to be part of Carmel’s new ‘beach-front’ property,” said Mayor Jim Brainard. “Our Monon expansion will help alleviate congestion on the greenway, provide better options for a variety of family activities and with new corporate investments, keep our local property tax levels among the lowest in the state of Indiana.”

Construction was already underway on the new Monon Boulevard at 1st, 2nd and 4th streets. Other phases of the work will be completed throughout the spring and summer months with completion tentatively set for the end of the year, but the greenway will remain open throughout the entirety of the project.

In my nearly 20-year tenure as a nurse at Riley Hospital for Children, I found myself repeatedly astonished and humbled, not only by the kids and young adults battling a monstrous adversary like sickle cell disease but more so by their enormous tenacity and resilience. Despite draining hospital stays and distressing procedures, these young ones always shone bright, their resilient spirits undeniably inspiring....
