Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-16) has selected Sen. Ryan Mishler (R-9) as the next chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations. The Bremen Republican will succeed Sen. Luke Kenley (R-20), who is retiring in September.
Mishler currently serves as the Senate Majority Whip and has been a ranking member of the Appropriations Committee for the past five years. He currently chairs the Subcommittee on School Funding and previously chaired the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources.
"Ryan’s excellent work on the school funding formula in the last several state budgets has proven he has the acumen, skills and temperament required to handle this challenging position," said Long. "I am pleased that he will be taking on this new role. He has big shoes to fill, but I am confident he will continue to provide the strong leadership Sen. Kenley has displayed during his many years of service as chairman."
House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-88) announced his support for the appointment.
"The chair of the Appropriations Committee plays a critical role in keeping Indiana’s financial position strong, and I am confident State Sen. Ryan Mishler’s breadth of experience will be a great addition to the fiscal leadership team at the Statehouse," said Bosma. "We look forward to working together to maintain Indiana’s AAA credit rating and our top position in economic and government rankings for the Midwest."
Kenley has chaired the committee since 2009. He announced his retirement lat month.
