The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a nearly $28 million contract boost which will have an impact in Lawrence County. Virginia-based Science Applications International Corp. is the recipient of the contract, though the majority of the work will be performed in Bedford.
The contract calls for the production afterbody and tailcone sections for MK 48 Mod 7 heavyweight torpedoes for the U.S. Navy, as well as support materials, spares, engineering and hardware repair support. Most of the work will take place in Bedford with the remaining work being performed in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Indianapolis.
Work is expected to be complete by July 2020. The award is an extension of a $383 million contract announced in November for the production of the same materials.
The Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington D.C. is the contracting activity.
