INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The International Center has selected Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Company and longtime civic leader, as its 2013 International Citizen of the Year. He will be honored at an October 2, 2013 dinner and program at the Indianapolis downtown JW Marriott hotel. Former Senator Richard Lugar and former Governor Mitch Daniels serve as honorary co-chairs, and Allison Melangton and Carey Lykins serve as co-chairs for the event.
The award was established in 1985 to honor individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the globalization of Indiana in business, culture, education, government, medicine, research, media, sports, or community service. Miles joins an illustrious list of prominent community leaders who contributions in one or more of these areas have been showcased and honored at past International Citizen of the Year award events. Former winners include Senator Richard Lugar; Congressman Lee Hamilton; Governors Mitch Daniels and Robert Orr; Mayor William Hudnut; Jim Morris; K.P. Singh; Sidney Taurel; Christel DeHaan, the late Rev. Fr. Boniface Hardin and Dr. Martin Jischke, among others.
Mark Miles’ storied career has spanned several decades, centering primarily on sporting spectaculars and on noteworthy corporate and community service.
From cutting his teeth producing and organizing the Pan American Games in Indianapolis – the most successful Pan Am Games in history; to serving as President and Tournament Director of the ATP Indianapolis tennis tournament, overseeing its transition from clay to hard courts; to expanding the global presence of the Association of Tennis Professionals and building it into a world-class, professional organization; to spearheading the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl – first leading the bidding effort, then chairing the Host Committee; to his current role as Chief Executive Officer of Human & Company where he, among other business interests, leads the world’s most revered racing franchise, Mark has left an international imprint on everything he has touched in the sporting arena.
But his international imprint hasn’t been limited to the field of sporting events. Early in his career he applied his communications and relationship acumen to his tenure with Eli Lilly and Company. Prior to stepping into the role he fills today, he served for six years as President and Chief Executive Officer of Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, Inc. (“CICP”), a non-profit, regional alliance of CEOs and university presidents focused on long-term growth and economic development within the Central Indiana. Those efforts manifested themselves in the creation of four branded initiatives known as BioCrossroads, TechPoint, Conexus Indiana and Energy Systems Network, all of which have continued to grow and thrive in a local environment that attracts and welcomes global relationships.
One of Mark’s most significant legacies is one known by that name… the Legacy Project, a civic effort spawned by the 2012 Super Bowl that directly generated a Youth Education Town and revitalization of the East 10th Street business district. This Super Bowl gift to the community has created a lasting legacy and impact beyond game week, and Mark’s leadership and involvement in this effort continues through today.
