Two development projects in Michigan City have received tax abatements from the city council. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the projects, which include a new hotel and a manufacturing plant expansion, will create a total of up to 35 jobs over the next five years.
Michigan-based Amerilodge Group plans to invest more than $7 million to construct a four-story Holiday Inn & Suites Hotel. Located near the new Franciscan Health Michigan City hospital currently under construction, the hotel is expected to create 25 jobs.
The five-year tax abatement for the hotel is expected to save the company nearly $400,000, according to the publication.
The council has also approved a five-year tax abatement for Mulhern Belting Inc., which plans to invest $1 million to add 14,000 square feet of space to its existing facility. The company, which manufactures industrial conveyor belts, currently employs 15 and plans to add up to 10 jobs over the next five years as a result of the expansion.
The abatement is expected to save Mulhern nearly $25,000 over five years. The Times says the abatement aims to not only help the company grow but retain its presence in Michigan City.
