Two Hoosier mayors have pitched plans for a new Lake Michigan port to a General Assembly joint committee. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report Gary's Karen Freeman-Wilson and East Chicago's Anthony Copeland are seeking a feasibility study on the proposals. The Ports of Indiana Burns Harbor is located in Portage, which resides at a different part of the shoreline.

Portage Mayor James Snyder, also a part of Thursday's testimony, says more information is needed to find ways to expand his city's asset and explore the need for another.

Ports of Indiana Chief Executive Officer Rich Cooper says the stiffest competition comes from the Port of Chicago and efforts should be focused on vying for additional market share.
