Mayoral Races Include Upsets

Our partners at WIBC/Network Indiana report more than a dozen incumbents lost bids for re-election, including notable defeats in Anderson, Elkhart, Logansport and Lawrence. In Indianapolis, the state’s largest city swung from outgoing Republican Mayor Greg Ballard to a Democrat mayor-elect, former U.S. District Attorney Joe Hogsett.
Current Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith, a Republican, lost to Democrat Thomas Broderick. Former six-term Republican member of the Indiana House Tim Neese beat Democrat Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore to upset the 80-year-old’s bid for a third term. Republican Steve Collier defeated current Lawrence Mayor Jessup, a Democrat. Democrat, Dave Kitchell, will be Logansport mayor after defeating Republican incumbent Ted Franklin.
Republicans were the narrow winner in the overall in the total count, holding a few more seats than Democrats when the night was over. Statewide, Republicans count 59 mayors-elect, Democrats have 56 and Independents hold five mayor seats.
The Jasper race finished Tuesday night in a tie. Incumbent Democrat Terry Seitz and challenger, Republican Wayne Schuetter, finished the night with a tally of 1,856 votes. The Dubois County Free Press reports the candidates have until November 17 to contest the results. If a tie is finalized, it will move to the Jasper city council for a final vote.
